Melville Gray

Melville W. Gray, 85, died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital on August 20, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born on March 23, 1926 in Salina, KS, to Frank and Sarah E. (Fender) Gray.
Mel was in the US Navy, serving from 1944-1946. He graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Kansas. He was awarded the Samuel J. Crumbine Award; he was Director of Environmental Services for the State of Kansas Department of Health for 15 years. He was active in the American Society of Civil Engineers and was a National President of the American Society of State and Interstate Water Pollution Control Administrators. Mel was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He married Frances Herring on December 18, 1949 in Rocky Ford, CO. She survives of the home. Other survivors include one daughter, Susan Kramer, Independence, MO; two sons, Steven M. Gray, Hoyt, KS, Thomas N. Page, Grand Prairie, TX; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
