Mona was born in McPherson, Kansas on September 4, 1928 to Dan and Louise (Martens) Ratzlaff. Mona’s childhood years were spent in Hillsboro, Plains, and Lakin, Kansas, and she graduated from high school in Bakersfield, California. She attended the University of Kansas, completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Her graduation class was the first to walk through the Memorial Campanile in the spring of 1950.
Mona was united in marriage to John E. Crump on October 22, 1950 in Garden City, Kansas. Mona and John lived briefly in Germany right after their wedding, while John served with the U.S. Army. After John’s military service ended, and a brief return to Kansas, the couple lived overseas for much of their lives serving with the United States Foreign Service Diplomatic Corps in Auckland, New Zealand; Stuttgart, Germany; The Hague, Netherlands; Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the Air Force Academy; Brussels, Belgium; London, England; Tel Aviv, Israel; and at the State Department in Washington, D.C. John and Mona “retired” to Lakin, Kansas where they managed the family farm.
Mona was active in P.E.O. for 72 years, both overseas and in the U.S. She shared her love for P.E.O. and education by traveling throughout Kansas and to various states for Conventions. Mona’s passion was also seen in her volunteer work with special education children during her adult life.
Mona was preceded in death by her twin brother, Corbett (at birth); her parents; and husband, John. She is survived by daughter Anne (Mark) Jarboe, granddaughter Kristen (Cordeus) Anderson, and great-grandchildren Emma Mae Louise and Quinton Xavier.
