Funeral services for Olelah Mae Morris will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee, OK.

Olelah Mae Morris was born August 25, 1925 in Claremore, Oklahoma. The daughter of David and Flora Cornell. She was an active member of Indian Avenue Baptist Church and an enrolled member of the Muscogee Creek Nation. She graduated from Chilocco Indian School in Chilocco, Oklahoma. She married Samuel F. Morris on December 9, 1943. He preceded her in death December 27, 1973, also preceding her in death was infant son, Mark Morris; and sister, Susie Alford. Olelah Mae and her husband first served when Sam was called to pastor at Indian Center in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Other pastorates included, the First Indian Mission in Ada, the First Indian Mission in Shawnee, and Bowen Place Baptist Mission in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Olelah, her husband, and sons were called by the Haskell Baptist Mission on November 16, 1969 to minister to the students, faculty, and staff of Haskell Indian Nations University. Upon her husband’s death, she attended and graduated from Haskell in 1975. Olelah was employed within the facilities department at Haskell and continued to work for 21 years. She loved the Haskell community and especially cheering on Haskell’s athletes.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law: Sam and Carol Morris of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, David Morris of Lawrence, Kansas, Joe and Linda Morris of Phoenix, Arizona, and John and Tracie Morris of Lawrence, Kansas. She was survived by seven grandchildren: Brian Morris of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Alicia Shelton of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, Jeremy Morris, Mitchell Morris, Bradley Morris, all from Phoenix, Arizona, Kelly Berryhill and Lindsey Morris of Lawrence, Kansas and nine great grandchildren; and sister, Ruth Ann Wahpecome, Okmulgee, Oklahoma

The family will greet friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Indian Avenue Baptist Church specifically designated to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
