Phyllis Wheeler

Services for Phyllis May Wheeler, 75, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  The burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Mildred, Kansas.  The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.  She died May 1, 2025, at LMH Health.

Phyllis was born June 18, 1949, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Victor and Dorothy (Carpenter) Shoate.

Phyllis graduated from West High School in Wichita, KS.  She lived in Wichita until 1999 then moved to Turney, Missouri and in 2020 moved to Lawrence, KS to be closer to family.

Phyllis worked as a Physical Therapist assistant for home health care and nursing care facilities.

She was an avid crafter and an exceptional seamstress; she made many wedding and formal dresses.  She enjoyed quilting in her later years.  She played many card games and monopoly with family and friends.  She spent many hours watching wildlife, hummingbirds, tending to her flowers and mowing her lawn.

She was a member of KC Bead Society and a Campfire Girls leader for several groups over the years.

She married Donald Wheeler on June 7, 1968, in Wichita, KS. He preceded her in death in 2001.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Roy Shoate and Michael Shoate.

Survivors include her daughter, Christina (Steven) Berger; son, Daniel (Jennifer) Wheeler; sister, Nancy (Jack) Lofton; two grandchildren, Harmony and Symphony Wheeler; many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Association and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary 120 W. 13 ^th St. Lawrence, KS 66044.
