Ralph Jenkins

Funeral services for Ralph “Wayne” Jenkins, 88, of Winfield, Kansas, and long-time resident of Lawrence, KS, will be held 10 a.m., Monday, May 16 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, KS. He died May 11, 2011 at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield, KS.  He had been a resident of Kansas Veteran’s Home in Winfield for the last four years.

Mr. Jenkins was born August 14, 1922 in Emporia, KS, the son of Samuel Evan and Ruth Ann (Vickrey) Jenkins.

He grew up in Emporia and attended Emporia Senior High School until he was drafted into the Army Air Corp.  Most of his duty time was spent in England.

Mr. Jenkins worked for the A&P Grocery store in the produce department for 17 years and later was a self-employed painter until his retirement.

While in England, he met Vera Cope, whom he married in 1945 in Hemple Hempstead, England. Vera, his ex-wife, preceded him in death on January 15, 2004.  He married Juanita Neis in 1969.  Juanita preceded him in death on June 10, 2005.

He is survived by three sons, David, and wife, Della of Rochester, MN, Danny, and wife, Kathleen of Wichita, KS, Dennis, and wife, Sheila of Maui, HI, two granddaughters, five grandsons and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Monday at the mortuary.  Interment will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, KS.

The family suggests memorials to the O’Connell Youth Ranch, 1621 North 1320 Road, Lawrence, KS  66046 and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
