Memorial Services for Robert Grant Halbert, 86, will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. with a Visitation starting at 2:00 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary at 120 W 13 th St, Lawrence, KS 66044. Robert passed on August 19, 2024 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Robert was born on February 3, 1938, in Mount Gilead, OH, the son of Earl and Dale (Campbell) Halbert. He graduated from Mount Gilead High School and joined the army after graduation. He served 3 tours in Germany and 1 tour in Vietnam. He retired at Fort Riley, KS in 1976 after serving 20 years. The family moved to Lawrence, KS in 1977. He held various jobs before retiring as the Bookkeeper at Mark’s Jewelers, Lawrence, KS.
Robert met his wife, Christina (Johnson) Halbert at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, CO while both were training to be Medical Specialists. They married on January 11, 1964, in the Chapel at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. She survives at home. He always joked that she was his Army issued wife.
He had many, many hobbies over the years, such as hunting, fishing, biking, antique toys, clocks, marbles, etc. During his later years, he enjoyed panning for gold and golfing with his wife.
Other survivors include daughter, Julie Halbert; sons, Robin Halbert, Stanley Halbert, and Alvin Halbert; two grandchildren, and one great-grand child; and brother, Phil Halbert. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother, George Halbert, and sister, Rebecca Axmann.
Memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s name to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13 th St, Lawrence, KS 66044.
