Mass of Christian Burial for Robert Orvis Whitaker, 90, of Lawrence, Kansas will be held
10 a.m., Saturday February 13, 2010 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Mr. Whitaker died Saturday, February 6, 2010 in Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lawrence with Military Honors.
He was born August 2, 1919 in Paola, Kansas the son of Don C. and Nancy E. (Thomas) Whitaker.
He worked at DuPont for 25 years retiring in 1982 as a Safety Supervisor.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired Major in the United States Army Reserve.
He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, American Legion, Alford-Clarke Post # 852, VFW and Eagles Lodge # 595. B.P.O.E. , all in Lawrence, Kansas
Mr. Whitaker was married to Nancy A. Doyle on June 16, 1944 in San Francisco, California. She preceded him in death on December 11, 2008.
He is survived by two sons, Robert D. and wife, Kathy, Portland, OR, Patrick J. and wife, Veronica, Helena, MT; two daughters Kathleen E. Cook and husband, Stanford, Olympia, WA, Mary W. Davidson and husband, Michael, Lawrence, KS; three brothers, Don B., Lawrence, Richard, New Carrollton, MD, Phillip, Overland Park, KS; 15 grandchildren, Carolyn, Nathan, Ben, Jesse, Tim, Brandon, Eve, Justin, Jamie, Jon, Jaclyn, Julie, Amanda, Ivan, Daniel; 6 great grandchildren Tuyen, Tyera, Ty, Mason, Quaye, Deja. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis, Theodore and one sister, Elizabeth Hall.
The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary
Memorial contributions may be sent in his name to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care, and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
