Royalynn Louise Law Stewart died on June 20, 2026 in Lawrence, Kansas. She was born in Hays Protestant Hospital on October 13, 1936 to Mabel Findley Foster Law and C. Edward Law. She graduated from Hays High School in 1954, where she was active in instrumental and vocal music, drama, and debate. She attended the University of Kansas and was a member of the Delta Gamma Fraternity, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Following graduation, also in 1958, she married Donald Max Stewart in the First United Methodist Church in Hays.
Royalynn taught elementary education in Park Ridge, Illinois; Irving, Texas; and Dallas, Texas. She substitute taught for many years at Lincoln Elementary School in Hays, where her sons attended school. She sold real estate for Ellner Bickle Real Estate in Hays. She also bought, remodeled, and sold a house with her good friend Mary Larson—they were house-flippers before it was a phrase. Royalynn spent much of her time with volunteer activities. She was active in the First United Methodist Church of Hays, sitting on the board, singing in the choir, directing the children’s choir, and teaching study classes on comparative religion. She was a cub scout leader, a long-time leader and volunteer for the United Way, a board member of the Early Childhood Development Center, and an active volunteer on the PTA and the Hadley Hospital Auxiliary. She was a lifelong member of PEO, a women’s service organization.
Royalynn loved raising and spending time with her family. Together, they enjoyed sailing, golf, and motorcycle riding. She was a voracious reader and solver of crossword puzzles, and she always had a curious mind. She loved to antique, especially with her mother, Mabel Law. She loved dogs and cats, gardening, and KU, Fort Hays, and Hays High sports. She and Don spent much of their later lives in Chipita Park, Colorado and Rio Verde, Arizona. They lived their last years in Lawrence, where they loved being back in Kansas and on the “Hill.”
Royalynn loved people, never met a stranger, and had important friendships throughout her life. She will be missed immensely by son Brian (Christie) of Bluffton, South Carolina; son Craig of Denver, Colorado; daughter-in-law Maren Stewart of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren Sam, Jack, and Emma; and sister-in-law Cherry Law. She was preceded in death by husband Don, parents Ed and Mabel Law, and brother Clair E. Law.
