A Celebration of Life Service for Ruth Marie Hurst, 50, Lawrence, will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2009, at Maceli’s, 1031 New Hampshire, Lawrence.  She died on September 29, 2009, at her home from ovarian cancer.

Ruth was born on July 8, 1959, in Pratt, KS, the daughter of Robert F. and Edith (Beyer) Todd.

She graduated from Garden City High School in 1977.  She moved to Lawrence in 1978.
Ruth received her Bachelor’s Degree in general studies and her Master’s Degree in religious studies from the University of Kansas.  She had also completed the necessary coursework for her doctorate.  She worked at the University of Kansas library and other positions at KU.  She later worked at DST Systems as a mutual fund representative from 2004 until 2007.  Ruth was a member of the Friends of the Department of Religious Studies.

Ruth married Charles Ray Hurst on June 2, 1979, in Lawrence, KS.

Other survivors include, a son, Jerad and his wife, Kimberly, Lawrence; two daughters, Julia Ensign and her husband, Jacob, Olathe, KS,  Jillian Hurst, Lawrence; step-mother, Charlene Todd, Granola, KS; two sisters, Sondra Todd, El Dorado, KS, and Evelyn Todd, Wichita, KS, and a granddaughter, Nicole Hurst.  She was preceded in death by her mother in August 1981 and her father in July 2008.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Lawrence Humane Society and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
