Sandra “Sandy” K. Lockhart

d. September 1, 2020

Sandra Kay Lockhart, 61, passed away September 1, 2020 at her home. She was born on December 23, 1958 in Horton, Kansas to Orville and Patricia Calhoon. She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Jeffrey Lockhart on June 7, 1975. Sandy was a devoted wife of 45 years to her loving husband, he survives. She was a loving mother to her daughters and sons-in-law, Christy (Tony) Mastro of Eudora and Ashley (Mike) Tremblay of Topeka. She became a grandmother in 1999 and so began her new purpose in life. She had five grandchildren to whom she adored; Ethan Flores of Lawrence, Joey Mastro of Eudora, and Cadence, Camden and Ellery Tremblay of Topeka.

Sandy was one of seven children. She is preceded in death by her eldest sister, Candy Older. Surviving siblings include Ronnie Calhoon, John (Brenda) Calhoon, JR (Melinda) Calhoon, Kevin Calhoon, and Patty Rios. Her parents, Orville (Charlene) Calhoon of Lawrence and Patricia (Terry) Musser of Atchison also survive. As a loving sister and aunt, she also adopted and raised her niece, Cassie Calhoon, who she loved and took pride in as her own. She was a cherished Godmother to her niece, Chelsea Carter. She adored her and her boys. She was also an amazing host-mother to her foreign exchange students or “bonus daughters”, Aniela Flores Verduzco, Mayita Flores Turrubiate, and Krisztina Hajto-Bakacs. She also had many, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who she loved deeply.

Sandy was a giver. Those that knew her well, knew her for her cooking and baking. The best salsa you’ve ever tasted came from her kitchen. If you were sad, she would fix you some delicious Mexican food. If you had something to celebrate, she would make you some sweet treats. And at Christmas, you could always count on her to cure your sweet tooth with gobs of homemade candies. Christmas was her favorite! If you had paid her a visit in the last year, you were likely to receive a Christmas gift (or three) from her. She loved giving gifts. But candies and gifts were only the half of it. Sandy loved her Santa collection. She had victorian Santas, dancing Santas, life-size Santas, and traditional Santas. She always said that Santa brought the ‘festive’ to Christmas.

While her children were young, Sandy was a homemaker and mother. Once her children were older, she worked for many years at Columbia Savings Bank. She also worked for the Lawrence School District, Scotch Cleaners, and Medical Arts Pharmacy. As a military spouse and mother, she dedicated countless hours of her free time to various organizations including the Veteran’s of Foreign of Wars and the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Legion and may be sent in care of Warren- McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
