Sherry Ann Girty

Sherry Ann Girty was born December 31, 1966 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She left this earth on March 7, 2014 at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center. Sherry is the daughter of Andy and Frances Girty. Born and raised in Lawrence Kansas, Sherry attended: Broken Arrow Elementary, Cordley Elementary, Central Junior High School and graduated with the class of 1985 from Lawrence High School. Sherry is an Alumni of Haskell Indian Junior College and Pinnacle Career College. She is survived by her son Christopher M. Bowers of Lawrence, her parents Andy and Frances Girty of Lawrence, brother Gary and wife Loa Girty of Piedmont OK, brother Steve Girty of Lawrence, and twin sister Kerry and husband Rich Cuny of Okinawa Japan. Followed by three nephews (Logan, Garrett and Walker Girty) and one great niece (Jaeylyn Girty) all of Oklahoma and many friends whom she called family.

Sherry began her career at Haskell Indian Nations University as an Admissions Clerk in the Registrars office. She then took a one-year stint with the Agua Caliente Band of the Cajuilla Indians in Palm Springs, California. Sherry was always drawn back to her hometown and the Haskell Community. Sherry then finished her career, retiring from Haskell in 2013, having served over 20 years with the federal government.

Spearheaded the Adopt a Homeless Angel Christmas Gift
Veterans Supporter
Wrote letters to active duty native warriors
Advocate for Native Veterans
Cooridinated Warrior Moccasin Project
She also belonged to the LIUMC and served on the Board as the Secretary and PPRC member.

Sherry was not only active in participating in activities in the community but she was also a Facebook “Super-star” who enjoyed staying in contact with her friends and family, and even making new friends. Everyone will miss the wonderful Happy Birthday messages she would post, along with inspiring words, and taco sale announcements.

We will all miss her loving smile, and her willingness to help others. May she fly with all other Angels in heaven. We love you and look forward to seeing you again sister!
