Stanley “Stan” Leroy Shepard, 92, of Lawrence, Kansas passed away on May 11, 2026, at his home.
Stan was born on May 6, 1934, in Lawrence, KS to John Wesley and Margaret (White) Shepard.
He worked many years as a pipefitter for Hercules Inc. until his retirement in 1994. He was also a member of the First Regular Missionary Baptist Church in Lawrence where he spent time as a trustee and a member of the choir.
Stan was well known for his sense of humor, his willingness to help out, and his love of hunting and fishing. He loved working in the garden where he grew sweet corn that he generously shared with the community. With a “degree” in afro-engineering, he creatively fixed many things over the years. Stan played a mean game of Uno and spent many afternoons and evenings out on the deck waving to all who passed by.
Stan married Gwendolyn Thompson on June 18, 1988 in Lawrence, KS. They enjoyed many happy years together.
Preceding Stanley in death are his parents John and Margaret Shepard; brothers Albert Shepard, John Shepard Jr., and Harold Shepard; sisters Marjorie Shepard and Linda (Shepard) Young. He was also preceded in death by his wife Esther (Rodgers) Shepard and their children, Rachel Shepard, Stanley Shepard Jr., and Connie Shepard as well as granddaughter Thi-wan Shepard-Baines.
He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Shepard and children Chaneton Thompson, Tyrone Thompson, and Ashley (Sarah) Thompson. He is also survived by his sister Virginia Shepard, many grandchildren and great-grand children.
