Susan was born on September 5, 1948, in Burlington, Kansas, to Ray and Carolyn (Jamica) Helmer. She dedicated her life to education, working as a Special Education and Behavior Disorder Teacher in the USD 497 School District. She had a passion for teaching and made a lasting impact on both her students and colleagues. She believed in the power of learning and always encouraged those around her to push their boundaries and strive for knowledge.
Susan cherished her retirement years by embracing adventure and travel. She embarked on numerous cruises, explored the beauty of Paris, and visited many other countries, creating memories along the way. When stateside, she found joy in the simple pleasures of life with her beloved dog. Together, they took countless walks, spreading happiness in the community with every wagging tail. Susan’s warmth and love for life will always be remembered.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother, Charles Helmer (Lawrence), three nephews: Jason of Prague, Charles (Jessica) of Lawrence, and Kevin (Megan) of Topeka, along with five grandnieces and grandnephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Susan’s name to the Lawrence Humane Society or National Education Society.
