A Funeral Service will take place on Friday, March 27, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. with a visitation starting one hour prior at First United Methodist Church—West Campus; 67 US-40, Lawrence, KS 66049. Burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
She was born on February 25, 1936, in Houston, Texas to William Joseph and Victoria (Carlson) Nettles. She was raised in Atlanta. She went to college at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, then moved to Wisconsin after she married.
Victoria worked as a high school English teacher, substitute teacher, and in administrative positions. She later developed an interest in adult education and took graduate courses, going on to plan and lead writing retreats. Victoria was an active poet, whose work addressed spirituality, nature and human emotion. She also enjoyed drawing, painting and crafting. For many years she had a “card ministry,” where she hand-crafted greeting cards with personalized messages for people she knew.
Victoria is survived by her two sons Eric (Mary) Nelson and Brian (Marita) Nelson, sister Margaret O’Reilly, grandchildren Aimee & Karina Nelson, Ian & Isaac Nelson, nephews Steve O’Reilly, Andy O’Reilly and niece Viki Lee as well as grand nieces and grand nephews. She is preceded in death by her husbands Donald Nelson and Robert Eby, sister Barbara Nettles Carlson and nephews Alan, David and Wyatt Bibb.
Victoria was known for her kindness and graciousness, depth of feeling, creativity and Christian faith. We will miss her goodness, her smile, and the depth of her spirit. She blessed many people. We give her to God with both sorrow and joy.
The family suggests memorials in Victoria’s name to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
