Virginia (Ginny) Lee Beene

Funeral services for Virginia (Ginny) Lee Beene, 81, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2015 at Plymouth Congregational Church. Inurnment at Pioneer Cemetery will be at a later date. She passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at her home.

She was born May 27, 1933 in Dodge City, KS the daughter of Harold R. and Hattie Mae (Surface) Certain.

She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, a 50 year member of Prairie Acres Garden Club, a former board member of the following organizations: Lawrence Habitat for Humanity, ICAN, the Boys’ Club of Lawrence, and was a Girl Scout leader. She received degrees from the University of Kansas and the University of the South. Virginia enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling and spending time with her family.

She was Director of Christian Education and Care Pastor for First Christian Church where she was a member for 48 years. Virginia was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church for 17 years where she directed the Stephen Ministry program. Virginia worked at Stitch On until she retired in the fall of 2014.

She married Douglas L. Beene June 19, 1955 in Dodge City, KS. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Carolyn and husband, Norman Johannsen, Bemidji, MN, Sharon and husband, Victor Gardner, St. Petersburg, FL, and Leslie and husband, Steve Ahlert, Lawrence; one son, Steve and wife, Virginia Beene, Olathe, KS; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.

The family will greet friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2014 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Stephen Ministries at Plymouth Congregational Church and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
