Walter Reed, Sr.

Funeral service for Walter Henry Reed, Sr., 81, Lawrence will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.  Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.  He died August 6, 2011 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born on May 4, 1930 in Clarksville, Arkansas the son of Willy David and Helen (Hogan) Reed.

Walter retired as a custodian from the Douglas County Courthouse.  He was the coordinator for the annual Thanksgiving Dinner.  Walter was famous for his Wassel and good cooking.

He married Barbara J. Herbert on March 14, 1969 in Reno, Nevada.  She preceded him in death on May 2, 2000.
Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Walker, Wanda Reed, Denise Reed, all of Lawrence; two sons, Kevin Reed, Martinez, California, Walter Reed, Jr., Florida; one sister, Carol Harris, Lawrence; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Vaughn and Sidney McCullough and two brothers, Willy Alfred Reed and Thirl McDonald Reed.

The family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, August 8, 2011 at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Babcock Tenants Association and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
